Original Contributions of Major Significance

Originality begins the inquiry; influence beyond the applicant’s own work completes it.

Two propositions must be proved

The applicant must establish both an original contribution and its major significance to the field. A new method, product, artistic approach, business process, discovery, or body of work may be original. The petition must then show how the field used, adopted, discussed, relied on, or changed because of it.

Use evidence of effect

Patents, citations, licensing, commercial adoption, institutional reliance, independent commentary, standards, measurable outcomes, and detailed expert testimony may demonstrate significance. The evidence should identify the mechanism of influence rather than repeat the word significant.

Expert letters need corroboration

Current USCIS guidance recognizes that detailed expert letters may provide valuable context, particularly when corroborating documentation supports the claimed impact. Letters should explain the writer’s expertise, basis of knowledge, the specific contribution, and its effect beyond the applicant’s immediate circle.
