What the criterion requires

Published material must concern the applicant and the applicant’s work in professional publications, major trade publications, or other major media. The published material must include the title, date, author when available, and a reliable translation when the material is not in English.

Prove the publication as well as the article

A prominent article in an unknown outlet leaves a missing step. Circulation, readership, audience data, distribution, editorial reputation, and independent descriptions may establish that the publication qualifies. Those facts become meaningful through comparison with other publications serving the same relevant audience. The relevant comparison depends on whether the source is professional, trade, or general media.

Substance controls

A passing mention usually carries little weight. The article should meaningfully discuss the applicant or the applicant’s work. Current USCIS guidance permits consideration of broader coverage when it contains a substantial discussion of the applicant’s work, even if the piece is not exclusively about the applicant.
